ABOUT ELECTRA BATTERY MATERIALS
Electra is planning to build North America’s only fully integrated, localized and
environmentally sustainable battery materials complex. Thus far, in 2024 Electra received
$10 million in Federal government funding and $20 million from the U.S. Department of
Defense to provide support toward the development of its battery materials complex.
Leveraging the company’s own mining assets and business partners, the Electra Battery
Materials Park will host a cobalt sulfate plant with plans to build a nickel sulfate plant and a
large-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility. Electra’s focus will be to supply the North
American Electric Vehicle market with battery materials to support the manufacturing of
lithium-ion batteries within North America. Electra Battery Materials is an integral part of the
North American battery supply chain, providing low-carbon, sustainable and traceable raw
materials for the region’s fast growing electric vehicle industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Below is a list of primary duties and responsibilities for the Process Engineer position at the
Cobalt Refinery:
- Coordinate the chemical and/or metallurgical aspects of process engineering; including design, planning and development;
- Develop, configure and optimize processes throughout the commissioning and production phases;
- Provide technical support and detailed reviews of process design work including calculations, drawings and test work;
- Conduct metallurgical/material balances;
- Research and develop chemical systems and process applications;
- Oversee installation and operation of new systems to ensure equipment is installed and functioning according to specifications;
- May be required to support Metallurgical Lab activities when directed, ie; testing, QA/QC, reports;
- Collaborate closely with technical and production personnel to assess and maintain processes; monitor processing circuits and develop key performance indicators and daily reports;
- May be required to work directly on shift with operations during commissioning and startup phases of the refinery;
- Monitoring performance of the overall metallurgical processes and recoveries;
- Develop and maintain SOP, product design and engineering guidelines and other relevant documentation to support efficient processes and technology implementation;
- Establish quality control guidelines for the production process;
- Identify and interpret test work and other data in process design criteria;
- Conduct chemical and physical analytical studies and production testing;
- Manage troubleshooting, process development, and continuous improvement projects;
- Ensure processes comply with health and safety standards; and,
- Other duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent with Ontario Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) status is an asset, the company would not discourage recent graduates from applying as an Engineer in Training, also Chemical Technologists may be considered;
- Minimum 3 years’ of relevant experience as a Chemical or Metallurgical Engineer required;
- Extensive design, commissioning and operational experience of chemical or metallurgical processes preferred;
- Knowledge of materials analytical methods considered an asset;
- Must be local or willing to relocate to Temiskaming Shores, ON;
- High proficiency of Microsoft Office applications;
- Proven ability to work in a team environment demonstrating excellent communication skills;
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy;
- Superior organizational, problem solving and time management skills; and,
- Excellent written and oral communications.
